Asterisk BuyNOW

Thanks to a new partnership between Digium and Polycom, now it will be easier for small and medium businesses (SMBs) to purchase, configure and deploy an Asterisk VoIP system featuring Polycom IP phones.

The new, integrated system features the Digium AsteriskNOW software appliance and Polycom SoundPoint IP desktop phones—all components which the companies say are needed for businesses to deploy a "high quality VoIP solution."

Digium introduced AsteriskNOW earlier this month and is the company's first software appliance, the open source distribution of its Asterisk platform, which features a Digium-designed GUI.

AsteriskNOW features a new setup wizard, which serves as a guide for users for the installation process, which lasts only about 30 minutes. Included in the AsteriskNOW distribution are all the Linux components needed to run, debug, and build Asterisk for a business setting. The AsteriskNOW GUI gives administrators the opportunity to add, modify and delete users. Download options include ISO/CD Image, VM Player image, Xen universal guest image and LiveCD (burn and boot).

Digium has simplified the purchasing, configuration and deployment process by enabling new capabilities in its AsteriskNOW software appliance, including a one-click function called BuyNOW that allows customers to purchase Polycom SoundPoint IP phones, and a configuration process that automatically supplies the phones for instant customer use. Digium's Asterisk has arranged for its software to now support Polycom's HD Voice technology, which enables calls to have better quality when compared to traditional analog calls.

"This expanded offering with Polycom makes it even easier for SMBs to deploy and manage an Asterisk-based solution, from the beginning stages to deploying the phones," said Digium's president and CEO Mark Spencer in a statement on Wednesday. "This development is part of our overall strategy to offer an easy, rapid migration to VoIP in an enterprise environment. Partnering with Polycom further emphasizes our commitment to providing users with a simple Asterisk installation, based on only the best quality products."

AsteriskNOW's GUI BuyNOW feature will connect users to NETXUSA a VoIP distributor, to simplify the phone purchasing process. Polycom's full line of phones will be available through BuyNOW including the SoundPoint IP 650 with HD Voice, SoundPoint IP 601, SoundPoint IP 501, SoundPoint IP 430, SoundPoint IP 301 and SoundPoint IP Expansion Module. The line also includes the SoundStation IP 4000, Polycom's market leading SIP-based conference phone.

"Many small and medium businesses want an advanced, high quality and affordable VoIP solution, but the technical challenges can be a barrier," said Sunil Bhalla, senior vice president and general manager, voice communications at Polycom. "We are working with partners like Digium to deliver unique capabilities like Polycom HD Voice and to simplify the deployment process. As open source continues to play an important role in the evolution to VoIP, we look forward to working with Digium to provide innovative, cutting-edge solutions that help customers make this important transition."

Digium and Polycom had been collaborating on supplying Polycom SIP-based phones as the exclusive phone in Digium's Asterisk Appliance Developer Kit (AADK)T. Their joint efforts would allow SMB customers to benefit from deploying a combined Digium/Asterisk Business EditionT solution for a more affordable telephony experience.

Adtran director named Digium CEO

By GINA HANNAH
Times Business Writer gina.hannah@htimes.com
Danny Windham will start in new post Feb. 12

Digium Inc., which has enjoyed fast growth and national recognition during the past few years, is expecting even greater things with Adtran Inc.'s Danny Windham at the helm, the company's founder said Tuesday.

The two Huntsville-based companies announced that Windham, chief operating officer and director of Adtran, will leave Feb. 12 to become chief executive officer of Digium. Mark Spencer, Digium's founder and president, will become chairman and chief technical officer.

Steve Harvey, Adtran's vice president of channel sales and competitive service providers, will also join Digium, becoming its vice president of worldwide sales.

The two companies have had a relationship since Digium's beginning seven years ago, with Adtran, which makes high-speed telecommunications equipment, serving as one of Digium's investors, and Windham serving on its board.

Digium is the developer of Asterisk, the telecommunications industry's first open-source software platform.

"This is one of the most exciting days in the entire history of the company," Spencer said during a media conference call Tuesday. The new staff appointments "will allow me to be able to focus on the community and the customers and the technology of the company in a much more focused way."

Windham, who launched a company in the mid-1980s that was acquired by Adtran, said he was drawn by the opportunity to lead a small company again.

"I like the excitement and the mild chaos that exists" in a small business, he said.

Digium currently has about 85 employees.

Tom Stanton, Adtran's CEO, said the position Windham leaves vacant won't be filled.

"I am firmly convinced the current management team is up to the task of assuming his responsibilities," Stanton said in a news release.

National kudos

Spencer created the Asterisk platform in 1999 after starting his own business and needing a telephone system he could afford. Digium was born shortly after that.

Spencer and the company have garnered national attention: Last October, Spencer was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Alabama Information Technology Association. In July, he was ranked No. 17 on Inc. magazine's "30 Under 30: America's Coolest Young Entrepreneurs" list. He was featured in Forbes magazine.

Adtran President Joins the Digium Ranks

HUNTSVILLE, AL — (January 30, 2007) — Digium®, Inc., the Asterisk® company, today announced key executive appointments including Danny J. Windham, former President, COO and Director of ADTRAN (NASDAQ:ADTN) joining Digium as its CEO. Additional executive developments include naming Steve Harvey, former VP of Channel Sales and Competitive Service Providers for ADTRAN, to VP of Worldwide Sales for Digium.

Mark Spencer, founder and formerly President of Digium was named to the newly created position of Chairman and CTO. "It was an easy decision to bring Danny to Digium. His operational experience will allow me to focus more time on the customers and the technologies that will accelerate Digium and Asterisk in a way that will benefit both the community and Digium customers!"

As CEO, Danny J. Windham will be responsible for corporate strategy and executing the day to day operations of Digium. In his role as Chairman and CTO, Mark Spencer will continue to drive the strategic vision and technology direction for the company as well as focusing upon the development and growth of the Asterisk Community.

“Digium is at an exciting stage in its development,” said Danny J. Windham, CEO of Digium. “Asterisk’s momentum is truly at its tipping point – it is a great honor to join the company at a time when there is such a tremendous opportunity in the industry.”

Prior to serving as ADTRAN’s President, COO and Director, Mr. Windham held numerous positions at the company including Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Enterprise (EN) Division. Previously, he was the co-founder of Processing Telecom Technologies (PTT), a test equipment company that was later acquired by ADTRAN. Mr. Windham has also held positions with leading companies including Motorola UDS and ITT Telecommunications.

As VP of Worldwide Sales, Steve Harvey will drive Digium’s expanding channel strategy and business development activities. At ADTRAN, Mr. Harvey was responsible for leading the company’s Enterprise Division from a direct sales environment into a channel driven model. During his tenure he was credited for having doubled the revenues of the division. Prior to his 11 years at ADTRAN, Mr. Harvey served in a variety of sales and executive management roles at Data Processing Sciences, a large Network Solutions Provider.

Digium® Unveils New Software Appliance AsteriskNOW™

AsteriskNOW™ enables Asterisk implementations in 30 minutes or less

Huntsville, AL (OPENPRESS) January 4, 2007 -- Digium®, Inc., the Asterisk® company, today announced its first software appliance, AsteriskNOW™, the open source distribution of Asterisk featuring a Digium-designed GUI. AsteriskNOW includes a new setup wizard that guides users through the installation process with ease, regardless of any previous Linux experience. The solution can be up and running within 30 minutes.

The AsteriskNOW distribution includes all the Linux components necessary to run, debug and build Asterisk, making Asterisk easier to install and maintain in the office or at home. Users can navigate through a simple setup wizard, including the ability to use default dial plans and easy configurations. The AsteriskNOW GUI is highly flexible, giving users the ability to add, modify and delete users. Download options include ISO/CD Image, VM Player image, Xen universal guest image and LiveCD (burn and boot).

“Digium appreciates the initial response to AsteriskNOW. We placed the initial beta version on AsteriskNOW.org last month and have experienced over 2,000 downloads per day without any promotion! Our goal of reducing the complexity of installing and using Asterisk will expand the market for Digium into more mainstream use,” said Mark Spencer, president of Digium and creator of Asterisk. “Unlike other Linux distributions used to deploy Asterisk, AsteriskNOW does not have unnecessary components that could compromise security or performance.”

AsteriskNOW, based on the recently released Asterisk 1.4, is Digium’s open source software appliance. The AsteriskNOW.org website includes a forum for community support and feedback as well as a developer blog.

Support and Availability
AsteriskNOW is available for download on the official AsteriskNOW website www.asterisknow.org and www.asterisk.org.
